In the opening concert of Musica Viva’s 2021 Melbourne Morning Masters Season, rising pianist Adam McMillan joins members of the acclaimed Penny and Partridge quartets to perform this great Schumann masterwork alongside a crystalline piece for piano quartet by Australia’s Andrew Ford.

The Partridge Quartet is absolutely delighted to join forces with members of the dynamic Penny Quartet at Melbourne's Tempo Rubato for a stunning collection of String Quintet masterpieces.
​
From the Melbourne lockdowns of 2020 and the constant ever changing border restrictions, one very beautiful thing that came out of this was that we were still able make something positive happen and finish on a good note (literally!) last year.
​
The day we came out lockdown, Eunise and Daniel reached out to fellow Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) alumni colleagues- the fabulous Penny Quartet members Anthony Chataway and Madeleine Jevons who were also missing their respective quartet members around the country and world (Perth, Sydney, Munich and NZ!) to find a new way of filling our chamber music void.

With her ethereal voice and exquisite violin, Jenny M. Thomas is the enchanting new face of Australian folk music. Leading her band Bush Gothic and guest ensemble the Partridge String Quartet, Jenny dusts off traditional songs about bushrangers, dingoes and shipwrecks, fashioning them into dreamy chamber works of rebellious beauty. These familiar tunes have surely been sung countless times ‘round campfires and on the goldfields. They are now just as fitting for the concert hall. Bush Gothic trail a string of high profile international appearances behind them, having toured the most prestigious arts festivals across the world. "For this work, I really wanted to push the boundaries of what string quartets were capable of, such as the dynamic levels, thickness in texture and harmonic layering (using lots of counterpoint and expanded chords).
